![]() WHAT IS PERIODONTICS? Did you know periodontal, gum diseases, are the leading cause of why adults lose their teeth? Separation of the inner layer of your gums and bone from your teeth is usually caused by periodontal disease. Small pockets form on your gums collecting debris. This causes your gums to become infected, painful, swollen, and often leads to bleeding. Your body's immune system attempts to fight the bacteria that continues to grow below your gumline. This often causes other dental and medical problems. The poisonous toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque begin breaking down dental bones. Next, the tissue holding the teeth in place is affected. As the disease progresses, your gum tissue and bones are destroyed. Hence, tooth loss occurs. People frequently don't realize they are in the early stages of gum disease. That's simply because they don't recognize the symptoms. Only a dentist or Periodontist is truly qualified to recognize and diagnose the progression of gum disease.
